Tirlán Mountain Challenge 2026 takes place in Connemara to support mental health awareness
Tirlán is proud to confirm the return of the Tirlán Mountain Challenge 2026, a two day charity hiking event taking place in Connemara National Park on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 April 2026, in support of Aware, the national mental health organisation.
The 2026 challenge will see Tirlán employees and farmer shareholders take on two guided hikes in the Connemara region. Over the course of the weekend, participants will complete the Letterbreckaun Loop Walk in the Maumturk Mountains on day one and the Letteretthin–Famine Trail Loop Walk along Killary Harbour on day two.
Once again, the Tirlán Mountain Challenge aims to raise vital funds for Aware, supporting its work in mental health education and support services across Ireland.
Dr Lisa Koep, Chief Environmental, Social and Governance Officer at Tirlán, said: “The Tirlán Mountain Challenge brings colleagues together in a positive and active way, while also supporting an incredibly important cause. Mental health affects so many people in our communities, and we are proud to continue our partnership with Aware through this challenge.”
The Tirlán Mountain Challenge has become a key annual fundraising initiative for the Co-operative. In 2025, the event raised €40,000 through a one day challenge in the Wicklow Mountains, reinforcing its role in Tirlán’s wider commitment to supporting communities and wellbeing.
John Murphy, Chairperson of Tirlán and Director for Wexford, who is participating in the challenge, said: “Taking part in the Mountain Challenge is a powerful reminder of the importance of staying connected — to each other and to our communities. Supporting mental health is something we can all play a role in, and I’m proud to join colleagues and farmer shareholders in backing Aware through this year’s challenge.”
James Brennan, organiser of the Tirlán Mountain Challenge, added: “The 2026 challenge offers a rewarding but achievable experience, with experienced local and Tirlán guides supporting participants throughout. We’re encouraging everyone taking part to get behind the fundraising effort and help maximise the impact for Aware.”
Stephen Butterly, CEO of Aware, said: “Support from organisations like Tirlán is vital to the work Aware does every day. Initiatives such as the Tirlán Mountain Challenge not only help fund our support, education and information services, but also play an important role in raising awareness and encouraging open conversations about mental health in communities across Ireland.”
Aware is the national charity providing support, therapy, education, and information to people affected by depression, anxiety and bipolar. Founded in 1985, for over 40 years Aware has been supporting individuals experiencing these conditions and their loved ones.
